Cheap Holidays to Gran Canaria

gran canaria holidays

Gran Canaria is cosmopolitan, lively, spirited, and a holiday destination that is hard to beat. Underneath this well honed tourist industry, there is an island which is proud of fiestas, faith, hospitality and history.

Recently, the main resorts have developed smaller, chic satellite developments, offering modern and attractive accommodation complexes. Overall Gran Canaria is one of the two most developed of all Canary Islands. It has something for the sun worshippers as well as the 18-30 crowd who enjoy the hectic nightlife.

Gran Canaria has an incredibly diverse landscape, ranging from the mountainous regions inland, craggy cliff faces on the north, to the impressive sand dunes of the south.

Things to do in Gran Canaria

If lazing in the sunshine is not enough, then there is always the amazing array of activities. As the windiest of the Canaries, Gran Canaria is a haven for windsurfing and sailing. Also for water sport enthusiasts, there is bodyboarding, pedalo rides, jet skiing, parascending and water skiing available. Gran Canaria has three water parks and a number of theme parks and nature parks. All to be enjoyed in the warming sunshine, hire a car in gran canaria and enjoy the fantastic gran canaria weather.

Away from the beach, the island offers facilities for tennis, golf and mini-golf. For an experience of a lifetime, take a camel ride over the sand dunes, just for the fun of it!

Shopping in Gran Canaria

A trip to the capital of bustling Las Palmas has an extensive range of duty free shopping, as well as original architecture to admire. It is the largest commercial centre. Duty free is quite welcome as after the introduction of the Euro, what was a cheap holiday destination, Gran Canaria became more expensive for shopping. You’ll find all the major chain and franchise stores, both Spanish and international.

Popular souvenirs to buy are local handicrafts like baskets made out of banana leaves, pottery, embroidery, felt hats and miniature versions of the famous Canary wooden balconies. For sure, leave space in your suitcase to take all your quality souvenirs home!

Nightlife in Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria nightlife is not quiet and sedate, going on all night, as the pubs and bars stay open until 2am, and the discos until 6am – so it’s not a place that sleeps. If you’re staying in Las Palmas, the place to go to is Plaza de Espana in the Mesa y Lopez district, which is always very lively until early morning.

Elsewhere there is Cuasquias, a popular venue for free live music. Nowanda Café Club recommended for jazz aficionados and the Mojo Club is a good place to take in enthusiastic DJ sets.

If you prefer a quieter atmosphere and you’d like to try your luck, there are two casinos in Gran Canaria.

Eating out in Gran Canaria

Spanish cuisine is popular in Gran Canaria, and there are a good selection of traditional restaurants, authentic dining venues and tapas bars throughout this beautiful cultural island.

Dishes are simple, created out of their local produce and ingredients, including exotic fruit, vegetables and freshly caught fish. The sunny climate lends itself to alfresco dining splendidly well.

Visitors and tourists in Gran Canaria are well catered for as there are plenty of restaurants to choose from, serving a range of national and international dishes. From luxury restaurants with coastal views to friendly pubs serving bar snacks, Gran Canaria has it all.
