Latvia is a culturally rich country to visit for your holidays. The cosmopolitan capital, Riga is a bustling and beautiful old town with a gorgeous art nouveau district. For those who prefer beaches, twenty minutes from Riga, you’ll find Jurmala which is a wonderful beach resort. There is a white sandy coastline stretching 33km and backed by beautiful pine forests. Along this stretch there are lovely spa hotels where you can get pampered and relax to the full.
Liepaja is on Latvia’s west coast and is far more sedate and under developed than Jurmala. However, the beach is just as wonderful, and it is an ideal holiday destination to unwind and soak up the sun. In the town, there is wooden architecture sitting side by side with art nouveau buildings, so it makes a great city and beach holiday. There are two busy times at the end of July when the beach party festival means people stay up all night and party, and also the second week of August when the rock festival starts and it gets lively again. Depending on your taste you can either join in or avoid!
Another recommended place to visit is nearby Karosta, which is home to military buildings and the infamous Karosta Prison. It’s a prison that claims never to have had an escapee, and if you dare, you can even stay the night!
Sigulda is fondly referred to as ‘Latvia’s little Switzerland’ due to its hilly landscape, as the rest of the Baltics are, in comparison, very flat so this area. The Gauja River flows through this area, via the Gauja National Park. This is also a great place to visit, relax and explore. It is possible to canoe on the river, even if you are a beginner!
Latvia has great views, sun soaked sandy beaches, inspiring architecture and wonderful things to do. Latvia is well worth a visit.
