Skiathos is a small island in the Aegean Sea belonging to Greece. It is an island that has the most exquisite beaches. July and August is a busy and expensive time to visit the island so research your visit before you leave.
Skiathos Town is the island’s major town and port. The rest of the south coast is a string of holiday villas and hotels, plus a number of sandy beaches with pine trees for a backdrop. It’s a great place to visit for sunshine and a lively Nightlife, as well as to see the picturesque monasteries, hill top tavernas and even secluded beaches.
Things to do in Skiathos
Skiathos suits anyone who wants to spend quiet days on the beach or for those who want to get out and explore the island. There are day trips available where you can travel around the island or even explore the world beneath the sea with a diving school. There are some lovely secluded bays to see and enjoy.
Around the island itself there are many interesting places to visit, including historic monuments, and beautiful drives over towards the north side of the island, and the old town of Kastro.
If you want to see traditional sites of the Acropolis and the Partheon then a day trip to Athens may be the best way.
Shopping in Skiathos
Papadiamantis Street is the main Shoppingstreet of Skiathos town. There is the usual mix of tourist shops, supermarkets and fast food outlets. If you explore the side streets, you’ll find shops selling more traditional items such as quality linen and pottery.
There are interesting boutiques and stalls to explore selling a range of items of varying prices. There are the usual numbers of gifts and souvenir shops where you can buy the obligatory holiday mementoes.
At the resorts on Skiathos have only one or two shops, selling basic provisions and a limited range of souvenirs. Overall it is better to venture out and explore the real shops!
Nightlife in Skiathos
Skiathos Town Nightlife is lively without being raucous. There is something for everyone to enjoy. There’s places to have relaxing romantic evening providing excellent food and wine, but there are also lively bars, discos and clubs for those who like to party hard until the early hours.
There is a club strip situated on the waterfront where you can find a wide choice of venues. In Skiathos, you’ll find several cocktail bars in the old port.
Nightclubs have free entry, apart from ‘Arena’ which makes it easy to move from club to club. The dress code is relaxed and the music tends to be middle of the road, so relax and enjoy!
Eating out in Skiathos
Skiathos, like most of the Greek islands is a great opportunity to taste traditional Greek food and try out their extremely fresh fish and seafood. It is not uncommon to see grilled swordfish, deep fried squid and big, juicy prawns pan fried in garlic.
In the main Skiathos Town, you’ll find family run establishments to burger bars. The restaurants around the old harbour offer excellent Greek cuisine, along with great views. If you head to the western end of the little port, you’ll find restaurants there right next to the fish market – how fresh can you get?
